Long haul destinations gain prominence as well as superior quality, personalized travel experiences

The travel industry in China is experiencing significant shifts with the rise of long-haul destinations and a growing demand for superior quality and personalized travel experiences. Fliggy, a leading online travel platform and subsidiary of Alibaba Group, shares its latest travel data for the recent Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays in China.

Double-Digit Growth in Hotel and Flight Bookings within China

This year’s Golden Week holiday, which lasted for 8 days, showcased a double-digit growth in the total value of fulfilled transactions for hotel and flight bookings within China compared to 2019. The number of people making bookings for international flights reached its peak for the year. Additionally, Fliggy witnessed a remarkable increase of over 70% in the total value of visa application service transactions leading up to the holiday, compared to the same period before this year’s Labor Day holiday.

The Emergence of Four Major Travel Trends

As China celebrated its first National Day holiday without COVID travel restrictions, four major travel trends have emerged. These trends shed light on destination choices, preferred travel styles and experiences, and spending patterns.

Trend 1: Rise in Independent Travel Demand

The demand for flexible itineraries and personalized travel experiences has witnessed a notable surge. The total value of fulfilled transactions for local leisure tourism services, such as snorkeling and helicopter sightseeing at international destinations, experienced an almost ninefold increase compared to last year. Popular destinations like the Maldives, Luxembourg, French Polynesia, Argentina, Egypt, and Kenya saw significant growth in total fulfilled transaction volumes.

Trend 2: Long-Haul Destinations Gain Prominence

Long-haul trips have gained popularity among Chinese travelers. Top domestic destinations for long-haul trips, in terms of fulfilled transaction volumes for guided and independent tours, include Sichuan, Beijing, Yunnan, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, Gansu, Xinjiang, Guangxi, Qinghai, and Jiangsu. For outbound travel, travelers are opting for destinations farther away, including Australia, New Zealand, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Iceland, and Egypt.

Trend 3: Increasing Emphasis on Travel Quality

There is a growing demand for superior quality and tailored travel experiences. During Golden Week, bookings for four and five-star hotels increased by over 50% compared to 2019. Moreover, the total fulfilled transaction volume for customized travel products rose more than 20% compared to the same period in 2019.

Trend 4: The Asian Games Fuel Growth in Hangzhou and Competition Zones

The hosting of the Asian Games has led to a remarkable upsurge in hotel and accommodation bookings in Hangzhou and the six Competition Zone cities, namely Ningbo, Jinhua, Huzhou, Wenzhou, and Shaoxing. The total number of room nights booked across hotels in these cities increased by 60% compared to 2019.

Zhang Chen, Vice President of Fliggy, acknowledges the shifting preferences among post-pandemic Chinese travelers. The increase in spending power and the desire for personalized journeys indicate a discerning mindset. Fliggy is dedicated to embracing these evolving needs and providing exceptional travel experiences tailored to customer preferences.
