Steven LaBrie Shares His Journey with Il Divo
In an exclusive interview with Il Divo member Steven LaBrie, he reflects on his incredible journey joining the group.
Q: Can you tell us the process of how you joined Il Divo?
Steven LaBrie: I was in Austria rehearsing for a show when I received a call from David Miller informing me about Carlos Marin’s illness. Initially, the plan was for me to fill in temporarily while Carlos recovered. However, Carlos unexpectedly passed away, and as a tribute to his legacy, we traveled the world together, doing tribute concerts in his honor. Eventually, the decision was made to create an album celebrating Il Divo’s 20th anniversary, and I was asked to become an official member of the band.
Q: What can fans expect from the group’s upcoming performance at Wind Creek Event Center?
Steven LaBrie: Our upcoming performance at the Wind Creek Event Center will be a true holiday extravaganza. Not only will we showcase the songs from our new album celebrating 20 years of Il Divo, but we will also enchant the audience with our renditions of classic Christmas songs like “Ave Maria,” “Silent Night,” and “Adeste Fideles.” We will also sprinkle in some of our greatest hits that fans know and love, creating an unforgettable evening of music.
Q: Can you tell us a little more about your new Christmas EP?
Steven LaBrie: Our Christmas EP holds a special place in our hearts. We wanted to capture the pure nostalgia and fond memories that come with Christmas music. Each song on the EP receives the Il Divo treatment, showcasing our unique style and vocal talents. From the climactic endings to the jazzy Latin twist, these songs bring the joyous spirit of Christmas to life.
Q: How do you determine which songs are suited to your vocal style?
Steven LaBrie: Sometimes, it can be challenging to envision how certain songs will fit with our vocal style. However, we have learned that with the right arrangement, any good melody can be transformed to suit us. During the selection process for our 20th-anniversary album, we listened to hundreds of songs. Some were a perfect fit from the start, while others ignited a passionate desire within one or more of us to sing them.
Q: It’s been two years since Carlos’ passing. How have you adjusted to being the new member of Il Divo?
Steven LaBrie: Joining Il Divo after such a tragic event was a monumental task. However, it quickly brought us closer together. We have become like a family, caring for and valuing each other. While it took some time for me to feel comfortable sharing my opinions, I appreciate the camaraderie we have developed. Being a part of this extraordinary group is an honor, and I am grateful to carry on Carlos’ legacy.
