Change.org Petition Gains Over 1,400 Signatures to Prevent Oglebay’s Deer Hunt

WHEELING — The change.org petition to prevent Oglebay’s deer hunt has gathered more than 1,400 signatures, expressing opposition towards the event. The petition aims to raise awareness about the inhumane aspects of the hunt and persuade Oglebay to reconsider its population control methods.

Karen Kahle, West Virginia Animal Law Committee member and assistant prosecuting attorney, has been actively promoting the petition. The objections to the deer culling have been voiced through social media platforms, a petition, and now thousands of concerned individuals have signed.

Concerns Regarding the Hunt

The petition highlights two primary concerns regarding Oglebay’s deer hunt. Firstly, many people are troubled by the method used for killing the deer. As these deer are not entirely wild, the chosen method raises ethical concerns among petition signers.

Kahle argues that Oglebay has not done enough research and has failed to hire a wildlife biologist to assess the deer population accurately. She urges officials to delay the hunt and collaborate with a wildlife biologist to determine the most humane approach to manage the overpopulation.

Alternative Solutions and Legal Actions

Several suggestions have been proposed instead of bow hunting, including culling by military sharpshooters in a controlled area. However, since legal action seems unlikely to succeed, Kahle encourages Oglebay to take community concerns seriously and explore long-term solutions such as birth control for the deer.

Community Engagement and Public Response

While Wheeling Park Commission President and CEO Bob Peckenpaugh has acknowledged the petition and is monitoring public response, Kahle believes that more needs to be done to address the concerns of the community. She urges those opposed to the hunt to contact Oglebay board members directly to voice their objections.

“The community needs to emphasize the importance of approaching this issue as humanely and reasonably as possible,” Kahle said.

Conclusion

With the Oglebay deer hunt scheduled to begin soon, the change.org petition has gained significant support but has yet to achieve its desired outcomes. As the community continues to express its concerns, the hope is that Oglebay will reconsider their approach and find alternative, humane methods of managing the deer population.
