Mind-Blowing Twist: Shocking Details Revealed as Donez Returns Home to Lunas and Surprisingly Joins Cal!

Lahainaluna High School Basketball Star Lola Donez Signs with Cal Berkeley

Lahainaluna High School’s rising basketball star, Lola Donez, signed her National Letter of Intent on Wednesday, committing to play for the University of California at Berkeley next season. The signing ceremony took place in front of a cheering crowd of friends, classmates, and family members at Lahainaluna High School.

Donez, a 5-foot-11 combo guard, transferred to Oaks Christian High School in California for the past two seasons to gain more exposure and enhance her basketball skills. With college teams already showing a keen interest in her, Donez made the thoughtful decision to return home to Lahainaluna High School for her senior year.

“I’m back home,” Donez expressed over the phone prior to practice on Wednesday. “Signing that document was definitely nerve-wracking, but it was an amazing experience. I had tremendous support from my teammates, the boys basketball team, and the people who raised me.”

Returning home was a decision made before the devastating wildfire that struck Lahaina on August 8. Donez arrived just a few days before the tragedy, but she remains resilient and focused on the opportunities that lie ahead.

“I decided to come home in June or July, and I actually arrived a few days before the fire. It has been tough on everyone in the community, but being back on campus and having sports again is helping us get through it,” Donez shared.

During her time at Oaks Christian, Donez showcased her talent as a junior, averaging 13.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 2.7 steals per game. She was named the Marmonte League Player of the Year and also played alongside fellow Cal signees Gabrielle Abigor and Kamryn Mafua on the Jason Kidd Select AAU team that clinched the Select 40 national championship in July.

“Lola is a dynamic and explosive guard who can create scoring opportunities for herself,” said Cal coach Charmin Smith in a press release. “Her length and athleticism will improve our defensive presence. She has already shown her skills by guarding some of the top players in the nation during her championship run this past summer.”

Donez will be joining the Cal Golden Bears as they enter their first season in the Atlantic Coast Conference, having previously competed in the Pac-12. But before embarking on her college basketball journey, Donez has unfinished business in West Maui.

Wearing the official Lady Lunas jersey for the first time is something Donez eagerly awaits. She idolized former Lahainaluna standouts such as Cameron Fernandez, Maiki Tihada, and Fiemea Hafoka and is thrilled to spend her senior year with her childhood friends.

“To put on a Lahainaluna jersey and play for the Lunas is a dream come true,” Donez expressed. “It’s awesome to graduate with the people I grew up with and to have this opportunity to spend my last year with them. I’m really excited for this year.”
