In an incident that took place on Saturday night in Peterborough, Ont., police have confiscated drugs and a loaded handgun from a cyclist. The Peterborough Police Service reported that around 11:40 p.m., an officer spotted a cyclist engaging in unsafe behavior in the McDonnel and Bethune streets area. When the officer turned on the emergency lights on their vehicle, the cyclist failed to comply with the request to stop. Undeterred, the officer pursued the cyclist and eventually halted him at the intersection of Bethune and Stewart streets. During the arrest, the man continuously attempted to reach for a bag. Upon inspection of the bag, the police found a handgun with a tampered serial number, weighing at 61.8 grams of cocaine, 14.4 grams of fentanyl, and a sum of over $2,300 in cash. Following the incident, a 23-year-old male resident of Peterborough was taken into custody and charged with several firearm-related offenses, including carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm, and others. Additionally, he faced charges related to drug possession and trafficking, as well as possession of property obtained by crime and obstruction of a peace officer. The cyclist was also accused under the Highway Traffic Act for failure to stop, crossing a crosswalk while riding, improper bicycle lighting, and failure to wear a suitable helmet. The suspect is currently in custody and is expected to make a court appearance in Peterborough on Monday.
