Pirates’ Andrew McCutchen Signs One-Year, $5 Million Contract to Stay in Pittsburgh

Andrew McCutchen, the star outfielder of the Pittsburgh Pirates, has agreed to a one-year contract worth $5 million to remain in his adopted hometown, according to a person with knowledge of the deal. The person spoke on condition of anonymity as the contract was not yet finalized.

McCutchen, 37, returned to the Pirates last winter after previously starring for the club from 2009-2017. During his previous tenure, he made five All-Star teams and won the 2013 NL Most Valuable Player award. McCutchen’s return gave the team a much-needed boost during their rebuilding phase.

McCutchen’s days as an outfielder are likely over, as he played primarily as a designated hitter last season. His return to the team had a positive influence both on the field and at the gate, with attendance at PNC Park averaging over 20,000 fans per game, a significant increase from the previous year.

The Pirates believe they are nearing the end of their rebuilding phase, with Cherington’s efforts to add experienced players in recent days. The team has acquired left-handed pitchers Martín Pérez and Marco Gonzales, as well as signing first baseman Rowdy Tellez, in their quest to strengthen the roster.
