The Mercedes-Benz CLA Concept: A New Frontier in Electric Efficiency

When Mercedes-Benz announced the unveiling of an all-electric CLA concept, touted as one of the most energy-efficient electric cars ever made, many assumed it was a separate vehicle. However, it turns out that the EV version of the entry-level CLA sedan is not only a competitor to the Tesla Model 3, but also a standout in terms of energy efficiency on the road.

The Electric Answer to the One-Liter Car

While efficiency is not often associated with electric vehicles, it is an important consideration for those concerned about reducing their energy footprint and conveniently continuing road trips. Mercedes-Benz has integrated much of the technology from the EQXX concept car into the CLA, allowing it to consume only 19.2 kilowatt-hours to drive 100 miles. Comparatively, the Kia EV6 consumes 28 kWh per 100 miles, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 uses 24 kWh per 100 miles, and the Tesla Model 3 falls in the middle with 26 kWh per 100 miles. The CLA’s exceptional efficiency outperforms its competition.

Mercedes-Benz has positioned the CLA Concept as the electric equivalent of the “one-liter” car, an ideal in Europe that equates to achieving 100 miles per liter of fuel. This ambitious goal serves as a testament to Mercedes’ commitment to energy efficiency.

Tesla-Like Range

While Mercedes did not disclose the battery size, they estimate the CLA Concept to achieve 466 miles on the European WLTP test cycle. In comparison to the U.S.-market EPA test, this translates to a remarkable range of 350 to 375 miles, on par with Tesla vehicles. The CLA Concept also features an 800-volt, 250-kW charging system capable of delivering 250 miles of range (WLTP) in just 15 minutes of fast charging.

To achieve these impressive figures, Mercedes-Benz has optimized the CLA Concept by incorporating innovative technology. The concept boasts a rear-wheel-drive configuration, though it can accommodate all-wheel drive, and features a new heat pump system that is significantly more efficient than traditional heating and air conditioning systems.

Exterior Styling: A Dazzling Display

The design of the CLA Concept reflects its relationship with the current internal-combustion CLA, with chrome-trimmed creases and an elongation of the rear window. The vehicle is adorned with numerous three-pointed stars, visible throughout the grille, headlights, wheels, taillights, and even etched into the glass roof. Chrome accents and brightwork further enhance the bold and captivating aesthetic.

Interior Styling: Futuristic Elegance

Inside the CLA Concept, screens dominate the dashboard, extending from pillar to pillar, offering a nod to 1960s concept car designs. The center console features a phone charger, cupholder, and striking chrome accents. The sustainable cabin materials include recycled PET, bamboo floor mats, and a biotech-based synthetic silk for the trim. The silver leather upholstery, tanned using vegetable-based agents such as coffee bean husks, exudes a futuristic ambiance. The CLA Concept’s interior seamlessly combines comfort and style.

Level 3 Autonomy On the Horizon

Underneath the sleek design, the CLA Concept incorporates advanced technology. It is built on the MMA platform, making it the first vehicle to utilize the MB.OS operating system. This platform enables Level 3 autonomous driving capability, and Mercedes plans to offer this functionality via over-the-air updates. Additionally, users can expect a personalized driving experience with interchangeable themes and a virtual assistant named Hey Mercedes.

Mercedes representatives have described the Concept CLA as a near-production all-electric vehicle. The production version, expected to launch in late 2024, is anticipated to closely resemble the concept showcased here. While details regarding its arrival in the United States remain uncertain, the CLA EV’s emphasis on energy efficiency and its potential to compete with Tesla’s Model 3 make it an exciting prospect for American consumers. Further information on the production model will be shared as it becomes available.
