Tottenham in Talks for Brennan Johnson Transfer

Tottenham Hotspur is currently in negotiations with Nottingham Forest regarding a potential deal for Welsh international Brennan Johnson. The 22-year-old forward has attracted interest from other clubs as well, with Brentford showing a strong desire to sign him. However, Chelsea’s interest in Johnson has waned.

Spurs have identified Johnson as one of their top forward targets before the transfer deadline on Friday. While there are rumors about Barcelona’s Ansu Fati and PSV’s Johan Bakayoko being potential options, these reports are yet to be confirmed.

Tottenham’s preference is to sign a player with Johnson’s profile, as they seek to fill the void left by Harry Kane’s departure to Bayern Munich. Johnson had an impressive season with Forest last year, scoring eight goals and providing three assists to help his club avoid relegation from the Premier League. Although he has started in all three of Forest’s games this season, he has yet to find the back of the net.

Tottenham has made eight signings this summer, spending a total of £167.8m. However, their most expensive recruit, Micky van de Ven, cost £43m.

Brennan Johnson’s Versatility Would Be Valuable for Spurs

Football journalist Joe Shread from Sky Sports believes that Johnson is not a direct replacement for Kane, which is precisely what Tottenham is looking for. After losing their record goalscorer, the club wants to enhance their attacking options. However, they are not aiming to replace Kane with a similar player in terms of style. Instead, Spurs want a versatile forward who can fulfill multiple roles in manager Ange Postecoglou’s front three. Johnson fits this description perfectly.

Last season, Johnson played on the wing, behind the striker, and as the central forward for Forest under manager Steve Cooper’s tactical variations. Regardless of his position, Johnson consistently performed and produced impressive statistics compared to his teammates.

Potential Signings in Other Positions

Tottenham is also looking to streamline their squad by offloading several players, which could open up space for new arrivals. For instance, there is a possibility of one of Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez, or Japhet Tanganga leaving, which would then prompt the club to pursue a new center-back. Additionally, if Tanguy Ndombele and Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg exit, Tottenham would be interested in recruiting a central midfielder.

Some players who might be leaving on loan are Sergio Reguilon, Hugo Lloris, Djed Spence, Bryan Gil, and Dane Scarlett. This would provide them with regular first-team action.
