Google’s AI-Powered Bing Rival Finally Catches Up with Exciting New Features

Google has taken a few months, but it is now giving Microsoft’s AI-powered Bing a run for its money. The tech giant recently unveiled two thrilling features for its Search Generative Experience (SGE), and early adopters won’t want to miss out. Among these features is a long-awaited capability: generating AI images simply by searching on Google.

If you want to try these AI features yourself, you’ll need to opt into SGE, an experiment within Google’s Search Labs. Here’s how:

  1. Open Chrome on your computer.
  2. Sign in to your Google Account with “Incognito mode” turned off.
  3. At the top of the browser, click (+) to open a new tab.
  4. At the top right of the page, click the Labs icon (it looks like a beaker).
  5. On the SGE card, tap the toggle to turn the experiment on.

Once you’ve activated SGE, conduct a search including descriptive details, like “draw a picture of a bunch of large dogs playing poker on the beach.” SGE will generate up to four images that will appear above the search results.

Google provided an example to demonstrate this feature:

Select any of the images to view how the generative AI interpreted your query and added more details. You can also edit the description and generate a new set of images to get closer to your original vision. For example, you may want the dogs to wear sunglasses and baseball caps. The possibilities are endless!

Furthermore, Google has introduced the ability to create AI-generated images directly in Google Images. When searching for “fun Halloween decorations” or “new yard layout,” you will see a prompt in the image results to “Create something new.” Click on “Generate,” and a sidebar will appear with AI-generated images based on your search.

“While AI can offer new and exciting possibilities, we also understand the importance of responsible implementation,” stated Hema Budaraju, Senior Director of Product Management, Search. “That’s why we’re incorporating safeguards into this experience, blocking the creation of images that violate our prohibited use policy for generative AI, such as harmful or misleading content. Additionally, every image generated through SGE will feature metadata labeling and embedded watermarking indicating it was created by AI.”

Currently, Google AI image generation is limited to English-speaking users in the United States who have opted into the SGE experiment and are 18 years or older.

In addition to AI image generation, Google has introduced the capability to generate written drafts in SGE. Suppose you need to write a cover letter. Simply search for “write a cover letter for a job as an assistant editor at a technology and entertainment website,” and SGE will provide a draft. You can easily make the draft shorter, longer, or more casual with the click of a button.
