City of Lethbridge’s Land-Use Bylaw Undergoes Comprehensive Review
The city of Lethbridge is embarking on the first thorough review of its land-use bylaw since its inception in 1986. Led by city community planner Ross Kilgour, this project aims to update and enhance the existing document, which regulates private land development throughout the city.
Kilgour stated that while the bylaw has undergone various updates over the years, a holistic examination has not been conducted until now. He emphasized the significant influence of the land-use bylaw on critical matters such as housing affordability, economic development, and sustainability.
The objective of the renewal project is to make the bylaw more user-friendly and accessible, ensuring it is easier to understand. The current phase involves seeking public feedback specifically on social uses, including emergency shelters, transitional housing, and social services.
“This is an opportunity for us to engage with the community and gather input on the future vision of Lethbridge. We want to know what types of development residents would like to see in their areas,” Kilgour explained.
Phase 2 of the project, slated for next year, will focus on rewriting the bylaw and will require further input from residents. The overall timeline for completion is three years, and the project has been allocated a budget of $1.2 million in the city’s latest capital budget.
