The Kamehameha Schools Maui football team has secured a spot in the state tournament after a decisive victory against King Kekaulike. With a final score of 42-14, the Warriors celebrated a successful homecoming night in front of a sold-out crowd at Kanaiaupuni Stadium.

Head coach Ulima Afoa praised the team’s performance, stating, “These kids deserved it, the coaching staff did a great job, I mean, they played hard. We made some dumb mistakes sometimes, but all in all, I felt like our kids played well.”

The first half of the game was a back-and-forth battle, with both teams showcasing strong defense. Kamehameha Maui took a slim 7-0 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, King Kekaulike closed the gap with a touchdown, bringing the score to 7-6. However, the Warriors quickly regained control of the game. Quarterback Makana Kamaka-Brayce orchestrated a 62-yard drive, which concluded with a touchdown pass to Frank Abreu, extending the lead to 21-6.

King Kekaulike managed to score once again, but Kamehameha Maui responded with two more touchdowns to secure a comfortable victory. The final score of 42-14 reflected the Warriors’ dominant performance.

Kamaka-Brayce played a crucial role in the team’s success, demonstrating his versatility as both a passer and a rusher. His nifty 2-yard scramble and well-executed passes contributed to several key touchdowns throughout the game.

The win against King Kekaulike guarantees Kamehameha Schools Maui a spot in the state tournament, providing the team with another opportunity to compete for the championship title.

Looking ahead, the Warriors will aim to build on their successful season and continue their strong performance in the state playoffs. Coach Afoa expressed his confidence in the team’s ability to rise to the challenge, stating, “We’ve been challenged this year a lot during the league.”

King Kekaulike coach Tyson Valle congratulated Kamehameha Maui on their victory and wished them luck in the upcoming state tournament. Despite the loss, King Kekaulike’s season has been a significant improvement compared to previous years, with a winning record for the first time in over a decade.

The Warriors’ journey to the state title game in 2021 is a testament to their hard work and determination. With their sights set on the championship, Kamehameha Schools Maui aims to leave a lasting impact in the state tournament.
