Labor Day Weekend: Increased Traffic Expected, Highway Patrol Warns of Impaired Driving

To combat impaired driving, the highway patrol has conducted sobriety checkpoints, with the most recent one occurring on August 19 in Martins Ferry. McFarland reported that the checkpoint was successful in intercepting six OVI drivers out of the 1,030 vehicles that passed through the zone.
In terms of traffic accidents, McFarland noted a relatively low number of incidents so far this year, with only two fatal crashes in Belmont County and none in Monroe County. Unfortunately, both fatal accidents were alcohol-related, highlighting the dangers of drinking and driving.
The patrol is also focusing on safety measures for all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), as they have observed an increase in crashes involving four-wheelers and side-by-sides. McFarland expressed concern about parents allowing young children to operate these vehicles and emphasized the hazards of driving them on public roads. While some municipalities may allow their use, state routes, county roads, and township roads strictly prohibit riding ATVs. McFarland advised parents not to allow young children to operate these vehicles and emphasized that driving them while impaired significantly increases the risk of serious injury.
If any driver witnesses distracted or reckless driving on the road, the patrol urges them to call #677 to report the incident.
