Hollidaysburg Native Sam Lafferty Embarks on Pittsburgh Return

Former Pittsburgh Penguin Sam Lafferty will face his former team tonight as a member of the Vancouver Canucks. This marks his first time playing at Pittsburgh’s PPG Paints Arena as an opposing player.

Lafferty Thriving on the Canucks

Now in his fifth NHL season, Lafferty, a 6-foot-2, 205-pound center, has found success and stability with the Canucks. Vancouver currently ranks among the top five teams in the league with a record of 27-11-3. Lafferty has been a key contributor to the Canucks’ success, playing in every game and averaging nearly 13 minutes of ice time.

With nine goals, including two game-winners, and nine assists, Lafferty has made a significant impact. He has also accumulated 42 shots on goal, 58 hits, and 26 penalty minutes. Additionally, his plus-15 rating is the best of his career.

A Versatile Player

Lafferty has showcased his versatility by playing on various lines with different combinations. His adaptability has made him a valuable asset for the Canucks.

Lafferty’s Journey in the NHL

The Hollidaysburg native was initially drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the fourth round in 2014. He made his NHL debut on October 8, 2019, and played 94 games for the Penguins before being traded to the Chicago Blackhawks in January 2022. After a stint with the Blackhawks, he was then traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in February of the following year.

Before the start of the current season, Lafferty was traded once again, this time to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for a fifth-round draft pick. Under the coaching of Rick Tocchet, the Canucks have continued their success from the previous season and currently hold a strong position in the league.

Life Beyond the Rink

Off the ice, Lafferty enjoys family life with his wife, Madison, and their 9-month-old son, Hudson. As an unrestricted free agent after this season, Lafferty’s future in the NHL remains uncertain.
