A Sabine Wren Game Could Feature Its Own Cute Companion
Fans could be seeing the start of a new golden age for Star Wars video games. Though EA fumbled the bag with the Star Wars license and only produced a handful of games over the course of almost a whole decade, things are starting to pick up a bit, with LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga releasing last year, and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor launching a few months ago. And there are several more Star Wars games on the horizon, ranging from mobile arena shooters like Star Wars Hunters, to AAA open-world RPGs like Star Wars Outlaws.
It’s an exciting time to be both a gamer and a Star Wars fan, and it seems like the Sci-Fi-Fantasy franchise is only just getting started. With multiple TV shows in development and a new set of movies on the slate, there’s more inspiration than ever for upcoming Star Wars video game concepts, and a game centered around Star Wars Rebels and Ahsoka’s Sabine Wren has a lot of potential, and could even carry forward one trait that seems to have become a staple of modern Star Wars video games.
Cute and quirky companions have always been a staple of the Star Wars universe. In the original trilogy alone, there are multiple characters and creatures that fit this bill, from the loveable R2-D2 to Wicket the Ewok, or even Jabba the Hutt’s Kowakian Monkey Lizard pal Salacious B. Crumb. This trope carries through to the vast majority of Star Wars media, with K2SO fitting the bill in Rogue One, BB-8 doing it for the sequel trilogy, and of course, Grogu in The Mandalorian.
In recent years, this trope has even carried over to the realm of Star Wars video games, with Star Wars Jedi’s BD-1 being the perfect example. While BD-1 has tons of personality, he’s also practical from a gameplay sense, acting as a means of healing for player-character Cal Kestis and being able to scan environments and provide a map of the surrounding area. As far as Star Wars companions go, BD-1 is one of the most memorable, with him being expertly integrated into the video game medium.
Based on the trailers released so far, it seems as though Star Wars Outlaws is also going to be hopping on this classic Star Wars trend. Taking on the role of smuggler Kay Vess, players will be accompanied by an adorable little creature named Nix. Looking like a furry axolotl, Nix is even more helpful than BD-1, being able to interact with the environment to distract enemies, grab weapons off the floor, and bring them back to the player.
If Disney ever decides to greenlight a Sabine Wren game, then it already has its own version of this trope ready to go. In the first few episodes of the Ahsoka Disney+ show, Sabine is seen looking after a little Loth-cat. One of Dave Filoni’s fondest creations, the Loth-cat has cropped up across a variety of Star Wars media now, and its latest appearance in Ahsoka has cemented it as a new mascot for the franchise. Though it may look and act a little too similarly to Star Wars Outlaws’ Nix, a Loth-cat would be a great little companion for a potential Sabine Wren Star Wars game. Even if the Loth-cat didn’t actually join Sabine out in the field, its place back on the ship would surely be a cute little highlight for fans of the franchise.
