Jaw-Dropping Landfill Extravaganzas Revealed: Prepare for Mind-Blowing Events on Sept. 18!

Indigenous people and their allies in Canada are coming together on September 18th for a day of action called #SearchTheLandfill. This event aims to show solidarity with the families of Morgan Harris and Marcedes Myran, whose bodies are believed to be in a Winnipeg landfill that the province refuses to search.

Jody-Leigh Pacey, a survivor of missing and murdered Indigenous women (MMIW), expressed her frustration, stating that it feels like the government doesn’t care and is sending the message that it’s acceptable to dispose of the bodies of Native women because they won’t be searched for. Pacey finds this treatment disheartening and believes it reflects the government’s belief that Indigenous lives don’t matter.

The day of action is scheduled for September 18th, which coincides with the return of the House of Commons from summer break. Events will be held across the country, with major ones planned for Ottawa, Montreal, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Vancouver, Prince George, and North Battleford.

The Conservative premier of Manitoba, Heather Stefanson, has repeatedly denied requests to search the landfill, citing cost, safety concerns, and a lack of guaranteed success. However, the union representing landfill workers insists that there are no reasons preventing the search if proper precautions are taken. In fact, other landfills have been searched successfully before, as demonstrated in 2021 when the remains of Nathaniel Brettell were found in an Ontario landfill after a several-month-long search.

The landfill issue has become a major talking point during Manitoba’s provincial election. The Liberals have pledged to cover half the cost of a $184 million search if elected, while the NDP has promised to take action that Stefanson won’t, which is to make an attempt at searching.

Jody-Leigh Pacey finds the situation exhausting, especially as a survivor herself. She points out that there is no protection for individuals who have experienced violence, and there is a constant fear for personal safety. Monday’s events are open to everyone and will include speeches, drumming, dances, and marches. Those unable to attend are encouraged to wear red in support.

Pacey emphasizes the need for more people to get involved, as the government has not been listening to the voices of the community in Winnipeg. They have already organized rallies, marches, and even a blockade, but it feels disheartening to fight this battle alone. Pacey sees this day of action as an opportunity to raise awareness and seek support from across the country. She highlights that the landfill has been searched for other individuals in the past, so there is no reason why it cannot be done again.
