As construction on Seventh Street in Lethbridge enters its sixth week, local business owners are feeling the impact. The comprehensive project involves the upgrading of a century-old water main line and the addition of a protected bike lane. The City of Lethbridge has announced that once the paving between 3rd and 4th avenues is completed, this section of Seventh Street may reopen to vehicle traffic as early as next week. However, for some businesses, the reopening can’t come soon enough.

John Pyska, the owner of Big John Books, expresses his frustration with the road closure, as it has significantly affected his business. Pyska explains, “It has slowed down pedestrian traffic tremendously, and many people have no choice but to walk. Additionally, the parking situation has been dreadful. They took away 42 parking spots, making it challenging for people to visit, especially those with limited mobility.” He estimates that his overall sales have plummeted by 70% since construction began. However, Pyska acknowledges that recent downtown events, such as the sixth street block party, have brought in some foot traffic. He adds, “Many of our customers have made an effort to support us, which we appreciate. It shows that people genuinely want us to stay in business.”

To overcome the issue of limited parking accessibility in front of their stores, some businesses are offering their back alleys for customer parking. Jeremy Duchan, the owner of Gentlemen 3 Menswear, underscores the importance of maintaining business as usual despite the ongoing construction. Duchan comments, “Since we are primarily a destination business, I believe many people will find their way to our store regardless. However, it is crucial that we motivate them to come in by making it as easy as possible, such as utilizing our back entrance. In August, we also launched our summer sales event earlier than usual, providing customers with additional incentives to visit through promotions and discounts.”

Partial closures along Seventh Street up to Sixth Avenue are expected to remain in place until October 31st. For up-to-date information, residents are advised to visit the City of Lethbridge website or call the helpline at 311.
