Hancock Volleyball Seniors Shine on Senior Night

Fans show gratitude to the seniors before game against Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes

HANCOCK — It was Senior Night on the volleyball court Tuesday at Hancock Central High School. Before the Bulldogs’ game against the Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes, fans offer their gratitude to seven seniors, Josie Hembroff, Eva Heinonen, Emily Kilpela, Morgan Pietila, Brielle Keto, Ella Storm and Lana Aho. However, they were far from saying goodbye to the game.

Bulldogs Win in Four Sets

The group still has the postseason on their minds, and that was evident in the way they played against the Lakes, winning 25-13, 25-11, 24-26 and 25-15.

“They (the seniors) make my job easy, and hard, but in a good way,” said Bulldogs coach Kristan Coleman. “I have a ton of great players who go out there and work hard. It is a good problem to have.”

Strong Leadership from Pietila and Storm

Pietila set the tone for the Bulldogs in the opening set. She pushed the Bulldogs out to a 5-1 lead. Then came Storm to the service line and advanced the lead to 10-2. That morphed into a 16-5 lead and an eventual set win.

In the second set, the Lakes took their first lead at 1-0, but that was as good as it got. With a powerful jump serve, Storm again widened the game and put the Bulldogs up 12-4. She led the team with nine aces.

Lakes Show Fighting Spirit in Third Set

With their sharp play after two sets, it seemed that the Bulldogs would earn a sweep with one set to go. However, that wasn’t the case as the Lakes tightened up their game and won the third set. It was a set that saw numerous ties and lead changes. In fact, it was knotted even at 20, 21, 22 23 and 24 before the Lakes posted two in a row for the win.

Lakes Coach Wants More Consistency

“That obviously was our best set, but I wish they would have shown that same effort in the first two,” said Lakes coach Joslynn Perala. “Hancock is a good team, and I give them credit, but we need to step up and be competitive when it matters.”

Bulldogs Seal the Victory in Fourth Set

Lake Linden’s third-set momentum quickly fizzled as the fourth set got under way.

A strong opening service run by Hancock’s Aho set the tone and the score at a 5-0 lead. After the Lakes earned two points, Storm again showed her strength at the line and moved the Bulldogs out to a 12-3 gap. Keto had back-to-back kills at 21 and 22 points, and the Bulldogs wrapped up the match with the set win.

Notable Performances by Kero and Aho

Keto led the team with 12 kills. Aho spiked 11.

Looking Ahead

Hancock Set to Face Houghton Gremlins in Copper Spike

The Bulldogs have their work cut out tonight as they face the Houghton Gremlins for the Copper Spike. Interestingly, Hancock just played Houghton over the weekend losing 2-0 in the WestPAC Tournament.

“It (WestPAC) was certainly not our best, but we will be ready,” Coleman said. “We need to come out strong like we did tonight and play our game. I’m excited. It should be a good match.”
