Nearly Identical Hardware

The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro boast nearly identical hardware, with the main differences being in RAM and cameras. Both phones utilize the next-gen Tensor G3 technology, but the Pro model features 12GB of RAM compared to the regular Pixel 8’s 8GB.

In terms of cameras, the Pixel 8 Pro offers a third lens and includes a temperature sensor. However, these hardware distinctions have little relevance to the software variances between the two models.

The Pixel 8 is priced at $699, while the 8 Pro starts at $999. For the additional $300, buyers receive exclusive features that should theoretically be compatible with the Pixel 8. Yet, Google has chosen not to make these features available on both models.

Exclusive features such as Zoom Enhance, Night Sight Video, and manual camera controls are restricted to the Pixel 8 Pro, as highlighted by The Verge. This raises further questions about the advertised 7-year update guarantee.

Google’s Explanations

Google has not provided a clear explanation as to why these features are exclusive to the more expensive Pixel 8 Pro models. According to The Verge, Google simply stated:

These devices offer the latest hardware and software, including faster performance than ever before, upgraded camera sensors, and the latest AI-powered features – all powered by the new Google Tensor G3.

Furthermore, Google cited unspecified limitations as a reason for withholding exclusive Pixel 8 Pro features from the regular Pixel 8. The main differentiating factor between the two phones is the additional RAM featured in the Pro model.

Regarding the exclusive Video Boost feature on the Pixel 8 Pro, Google disclosed to Android Authority that the extra $300 in price helps cover the cost of the cloud infrastructure required to process the data. This reasoning is unrelated to the capabilities of the Pixel 8 Pro’s Tensor G3.

It is not uncommon for vendors to offer software features exclusively on higher-priced models. Apple, for example, does this with their iPhones. However, the exclusive zoom capabilities of the iPhone 15 Pro Max are enabled by unique hardware components. Interestingly, Google used to mock Apple for providing exclusive features to their larger phones.

It’s also important to note that not all Pixel 10 features can be expected to be available on Pixel 8 phones in the future, as the former may require specific hardware components to support certain features.

The Uncertainty of Future Feature Drops

Considering that Google has already differentiated the Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel 8 models without explicitly informing buyers, it is uncertain whether Feature Drops that may be developed for the Pixel 8 Pro in the following years will even be extended to the regular Pixel 8. It is possible that Google will simply encourage Pixel 8 owners to upgrade to the Pixel 10 Pro.

In addition, if future AI features continue to rely on processing by Google’s servers, they should technically be compatible with older hardware. However, Google may choose to limit these features to newer devices in order to drive sales.

While Pixel owners will still receive Android OS upgrades and security updates, it is the Feature Drops that enthusiasts may mistakenly assume will be available to their Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro several years down the line. Unfortunately, this may not be the case.

Google has previously withheld features from older Pixel models, as shown by the unfulfilled promise of Clear Calling and Guided Frame features on the Pixel 6. It is worth noting that Google’s support document regarding Pixel 8 updates does not mention Feature Drops, only Android OS releases and security updates.
