07 Nov 2023

Viktor Yushchenko, the former President of Ukraine, and his wife Katherine made a special appearance at The University of Manchester to engage with students and discuss the ongoing war in their country. This visit followed their participation in the events commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement in Ireland.

President Yushchenko Survives Assassination Attempt

During his presidency from 2005 to 2010, Mr. Yushchenko fought against corruption and sought to align Ukraine with the Western world, including integration with the European Union and NATO. However, his efforts were met with opposition, including an assassination attempt through dioxin poisoning that left him severely ill and disfigured.

Lecture on Citizen Democratic Duty

The highlight of the visit was President Yushchenko’s guest lecture, where he delivered a unique and thought-provoking speech on the theme of ‘citizen democratic duty’. He discussed topics such as independence, war, rebuilding, and integration. The lecture was attended by numerous Politics and International Relations students, as well as Ukrainian students currently studying at the university.

Commemorating the Holodomor Famine Genocide

The visit also included a trip to The John Rylands Research Institute and Library, significant for its archives of Malcolm Muggridge. Malcolm, a writer for the Manchester Guardian, was one of the few foreign journalists who covered the Holodomor Famine Genocide, a tragic event where millions of Ukrainians died from forced starvation in the 1930s. President Yushchenko prioritized the commemoration and recognition of this atrocity during his presidency.

Strong Support for Ukraine

President Yushchenko expressed his gratitude for the support shown by The University of Manchester and its students. He praised the bright, ambitious, and patriotic Ukrainian students studying at the university, stating that they make their country proud. He also expressed hope for continued collaboration in rebuilding Ukraine after achieving victory.

A Visit to Remember

The tour of the beautiful John Rylands Library was an enjoyable experience for the Yushchenkos, who were impressed by its stunning architecture and unique treasures. Additionally, as an avid beekeeper, President Yushchenko expressed his delight in discovering that the bee is the symbol of Manchester.

Professor Fiona Devine, Vice-President and Dean of Humanities, expressed her honor in hosting President Yushchenko and the First Lady for the lecture and visit. She highlighted the strong connections between Manchester and Ukraine and the university’s commitment to supporting Ukrainian students.

A Personal Connection

The visit to The University of Manchester was made possible by Professor Olga Onuch, an expert in Comparative and Ukrainian Politics, who has a personal relationship with the Yushchenkos.
