A New Campaign Aims to Reduce Crime in Neighbourhoods across Edmonton

A new campaign has been launched in an effort to reduce crime in neighbourhoods across Edmonton. The Make the Call initiative aims to make it easy for residents to report various situations by clearly stating who they should call. This campaign is particularly important for older neighbourhoods, such as McCauley and Alberta Ave., where residents have expressed frustration with ongoing issues.

Residents have been dealing with a range of problems, including piles of garbage, break-ins, and feeling unsafe in their own homes. Many are even considering moving away from these neighbourhoods due to the continuous problems they face. In earlier months, residents also had to deal with a high number of encampments along their streets.

Arts on the Ave’s executive director, Christy Morin, has highlighted the heightened crime in these communities since the pandemic. However, they hope to change how crime is addressed. Morin emphasizes the importance of residents picking up the phone and reporting incidents, as it can make a significant impact when multiple houses report the same issue. This heightened concern can lead to more focused attention from law enforcement and other necessary support units.

Arts on the Ave emphasizes that revitalizing old neighbourhoods requires keeping good neighbors who can help build capacity. Many people in these communities are in need, and it is crucial to prevent them from leaving. Residents are hopeful that if more people take action by reporting incidents, positive changes can occur.

Residents who have spoken up about their problems have even received calls from senior police officers who are concerned about their issues and the problems in the neighbourhoods. The key is to continue communicating concerns and reporting incidents.

If you want to report an incident in these neighbourhoods, Arts on the Ave has created a full list of contacts for you to use.
