Legendary Roughriders player George Reed passed away on Sunday, just one day shy of his 84th birthday, as confirmed by the football club in a statement. Reed had an impressive 13-year career with the Roughriders, ultimately retiring in 1976 with a record-breaking 16,000 rushing yards and 134 career touchdowns. He was a vital member of the Roughriders’ 1966 roster that secured the Grey Cup that year. Alongside his on-field achievements, Reed also received numerous awards and accolades including the Order of Canada in 1978, induction into both the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame and Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1979, induction into the State of Washington Hall of Fame in 1983, Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in 1984, and the Plaza of Honour in 1987. Additionally, Reed served as the president of the CFL Players’ Association for more than a decade. In October 1976, the Roughriders officially retired his number, #34, in honor of his exceptional contributions to the team. George Reed’s daughter, Georgette Reed, expressed her gratitude towards the Saskatchewan community and the Roughriders, emphasizing how being part of the team brought immense joy to her father and how their family was embraced by the fans. She believes that his legacy will forever reside in the hearts of Rider Nation and their family. Roughriders president and CEO Craig Reynolds paid tribute to Reed, describing him as a monumental figure who not only had a significant impact on the team but also on the entire Saskatchewan community and the CFL as a whole. Reynolds acknowledged Reed’s strength, tenacity, compassion, and dedication, and expressed his deep condolences on behalf of Rider Nation. He considered it an honor to have had Reed in their lives.
