Addressing Community Needs During the Holiday Season

As the holiday season approaches, The Salvation Army Hawaiian & Pacific Islands is preparing to meet the increasing needs of our communities. After the devastating Maui wildfires, the organization is calling on compassionate individuals to volunteer as bell ringers for the upcoming 2023 Statewide Red Kettle Campaign.

Supporting Vital Services with the Red Kettle Campaign

The Red Kettle Campaign, which has been around for over 130 years, aims to raise essential funds to support The Salvation Army’s services throughout the year. Volunteers will oversee the signature Red Kettles placed throughout the islands in November and December, and the funds raised will be used to meet the physical, social, emotional, and spiritual needs of individuals and families.

Greater Needs in Challenging Times

“Amidst the ongoing challenges our islands have endured initially brought on by the pandemic and compounded by the impact of the recent Maui wildfires on an already weakened economy, we anticipate that the needs of our local communities will be greater than ever this holiday season and well into 2024,” emphasized Major Troy Trimmer, divisional commander of The Salvation Army Hawaiian & Pacific Islands Division.

Expanding Social Service Initiatives with More Volunteers

The Red Kettle Campaign is a crucial fundraising effort for The Salvation Army. By rallying more volunteers, the organization can place additional kettles throughout Hawaii, expanding their social service initiatives. It’s important to note that all funds raised within these Red Kettles stay in Hawaii and benefit the specific communities where they are raised.

Providing Assistance to Wildfire Survivors

In addition to the Red Kettle Campaign, The Salvation Army is actively involved in assisting those affected by the recent wildfires in Maui. The organization provides direct financial assistance, as well as spiritual and emotional care to survivors as they seek healing and restoration.

Become a Volunteer Bell Ringer

Volunteer bell ringers play a significant role in the campaign. Their duties include staffing a Red Kettle, ringing the bell, and spreading holiday cheer to shoppers. Both individuals and groups can sign up as volunteers, making it a fun activity to do with co-workers, friends, and family.

A Long-time Bell Ringer’s Journey

The campaign has seen dedicated returning volunteers like Matthew, who has selflessly served as a bell ringer with The Salvation Army for 49 years. Matthew’s journey began in 1974 when his friend Clarence Kamai introduced him to the joy of bell ringing and sharing the spirit of Christmas through music. Together, they collected donations while strumming their guitar and ukulele.

“Music is my passion, and I love sharing it with others.”
