Delta’s Commitment to Diversity Shines Through “Inspired Journeys” Art Installation

Delta Takes a Stand in the Travel Industry

Last week, Delta Airlines demonstrated its commitment to increasing representation in the travel industry through a unique digital art installation in Los Angeles. The “Inspired Journeys” installation took place at Westfield Century City, an open-air entertainment plaza, as well as at the ADCOLOR conference, a premier diversity gathering for professionals across creative industries.

As an extension of our Faces of Travel initiative, Delta invited employees and members of the Los Angeles community to share accounts of memorable travel experiences, which were brought to life in real-time via digital sketch by seven commissioned emerging artists with diverse backgrounds. Among the selection of talented artists was Delta employee Andersen Cupid, Designer – Window Seat.

As an extension of Delta’s “Faces of Travel” initiative, the airline invited both employees and members of the Los Angeles community to share their most memorable travel experiences. These stories were then brought to life through real-time digital sketching by seven commissioned emerging artists with diverse backgrounds. Notably, among these talented artists were Delta employees Andersen Cupid and Cedric Smith.

Delta’s efforts to increase representation extend beyond its marketing assets. The “Faces of Travel” program aims to promote diversity in the wider travel culture, including social media, tourism ads, and other platforms. The initiative strives to challenge and break down stereotypes that have been perpetuated over time.

Meaningful Impact and Fresh Perspectives

Andersen Cupid, one of the commissioned artists and a Delta employee, expressed the meaningful impact of the “Inspired Journeys” experience. It provided an opportunity for artists to share their craft with a new audience while demonstrating Delta’s recognition of the value in capturing diverse stories and travel experiences. The art created through the installation offered a fresh perspective on participants’ most memorable moments, evoking tears and shared laughter.

Cedric Smith, another Delta employee artist, found the experience to be a literal expression of Delta’s commitment to connecting and reflecting the world it serves. By internalizing guests’ stories and translating their memories into art, Cedric felt as though he had traveled to places he had never been before. He emphasized the power of art in facilitating impactful conversations and creating pieces that not only please aesthetically but also reflect the unique aspects of individuals.

Capturing Memories and Promoting Diversity

Delta truly went above and beyond in celebrating diversity and inclusivity by creating over 200 digital illustrations for the Los Angeles community and attendees of the ADCOLOR conference. These illustrations captured a range of experiences, from summer weddings in Lake Como to annual family ski trips in the snow-covered peaks of the Rocky Mountains.

Travel Guide Series and Award-Winning Impact

Building on its commitment to diversity and inclusivity, Delta created a Cultural Moments Travel Guide Series in collaboration with various organizations and creators representing diverse communities. These travel guides provide recommendations through an inclusive and welcoming lens, with input from Delta’s partner, LATAM. The series was recognized at the 8th Annual Shorty Impact Awards in the social movement category, honoring creative and effective campaigns that support cultural moments and social activism.

A Lasting Commitment to Diversity

Ashley Sherman, General Manager of ESG Marketing, emphasized that Delta’s commitment to amplifying the stories and faces of diverse travelers goes beyond a mere initiative. The experiences of travelers from all walks of life have always been at the heart of Delta’s success and culture. “Faces of Travel” serves as a testament to Delta’s ongoing commitment to all travelers who have played a role in shaping not only the airline’s culture but also that of the travel industry as a whole.
