Big Red Defeats Indian Valley in Thrilling Regional Semifinal

After a slow start, top-seeded Steubenville’s football team fought back and secured a thrilling 42-35 victory over underdog Indian Valley in the regional semifinal. The win propels Big Red into the Division IV, Region 15 championship game where they will face Thornville Sheridan.

Impressive Comeback

Trailing 13-0 early in the game, Big Red bounced back and scored 35 unanswered points to take control of the match. The team’s head coach, Reno Saccoccia, credited their response for the win, stating, “I love the way we responded. It starts with me, I didn’t have us ready at the start of the game. But we got a big play that got our minds back in the game and I thought we played really well after that.”

Offensive Stars Shine

Quarterback Aydan Manning delivered an impressive performance, rebounding from an early interception to throw for 305 yards and four touchdowns. Wide receiver Isaac Hill, the East District offensive player of the year, had a standout game with eight receptions for 199 yards and two long touchdowns. Sabron Felton also made key contributions with two touchdown catches.

Indian Valley’s Resilience

Despite falling behind by a significant margin, Indian Valley showed determination and fought back. Their running back, Grady Kinsey, ran for 210 yards and three touchdowns, keeping his team in the game until the end.

Eager for the Next Challenge

Reflecting on the victory, Coach Saccoccia acknowledged the team’s shortcomings at the beginning and end of the game but expressed hope for better preparation in the upcoming championship match. “Indian Valley is good, their kids played physical and tough. We didn’t start the game very good, and we didn’t end the game very good, but we played good enough in the middle to get to the next step. Hopefully, we’re more prepared next week.”

An Exciting Finish

Indian Valley’s late surge made for an exciting conclusion to the game. They scored a quick touchdown, forced a turnover, and scored again to make the score close. However, Big Red managed to secure an onside kick with 38 seconds remaining, effectively sealing their victory.

The site for the regional final will be announced on Sunday.
