Canadian Defence Minister: Chinese Jets Intercepted Canadian Helicopter Near South China Sea

Canada’s Defence Minister Bill Blair has announced that two dangerous intercepts occurred involving Chinese fighter jets and a Canadian Cyclone helicopter on October 29. One encounter involved a Chinese jet flying over the helicopter, causing turbulence, while the other involved the launch of flares directly into the helicopter’s path. Both incidents occurred near the Paracel Islands in the South China Sea, well outside the territorial limits of any country. The Canadian helicopter was conducting routine exercises in the region.

The CH-148 Cyclone helicopter had taken off from the HMCS Ottawa, which is deployed in the region as part of Canada’s Indo-Pacific strategy. The first encounter with the Chinese jets was deemed safe, but the subsequent encounters were considered unsafe according to the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF).

The second encounter involved another J-11 jet intercepting the Canadian helicopter and launching flares. The pilot had to maneuver to avoid the flares and protect the aircraft. Fortunately, there was no damage to the helicopter, and all crew members are safe.

Canada has raised concerns about these intercepts through diplomatic communications with China. The Defence Minister emphasized that the Canadian helicopter and HMCS Ottawa were operating in international waters, fulfilling their duty to maintain freedom of navigation in international waterways as part of the Indo-Pacific strategy.

The intercepts follow a similar incident on October 16 when Chinese aircraft aggressively intercepted a Canadian plane during a mission enforcing sanctions against North Korea. The Chinese jets came within five meters of the Canadian plane during the eight-hour mission.

Earlier this year, there was also a near collision between a Chinese warship and an American destroyer during a joint Canada-U.S. mission in the Taiwan Strait. The Chinese warship cut in front of the American destroyer, forcing it to alter its course to avoid a collision.

These incidents highlight the escalating aggressiveness of China’s military activities in the South China Sea. Canada and its allies are calling for safe and professional conduct during intercepts to prevent any accidents or collisions.
