Christmas Tree Market Faces Challenges as Holiday Season Approaches

With the holidays fast approaching, the conditions could be in place for another tough season in the Christmas tree market. The industry is facing several challenges, including a contraction in the Fraser Valley with 15 fewer farms than there were five years ago. This means fewer trees and higher costs. Inflation is also contributing to the increase in prices, as the cost of everything from minimum wage to insurance to fuel continues to rise.

Keeping Prices Frozen

Langley’s Aldor Acres Christmas tree farm has managed to keep prices frozen this year, despite the challenges. However, owner Leanna Anderson states that it’s becoming increasingly difficult to do so. The cost of importing trees from elsewhere in B.C. is rising, and even farms that grow their own trees, like Aldor Acres, are feeling the pressure.

Effects of Climate Change

The effects of climate change are also impacting the Christmas tree industry. Prolonged drought and the resulting dry weather have affected many farms, although Aldor Acres has been fortunate to have an irrigation system in place. Anderson explains that farmers without irrigation suffer the most, particularly for seedlings and more vulnerable trees like Grand Fir.

Youth Disinterest and Commitment to Revitalization

Another challenge facing the industry is the lack of interest from younger people. Many no longer want to stick with the Christmas tree business due to long hours, low margins, and the temptation to sell valuable land. Despite these obstacles, Anderson and others are committed to revitalizing the industry and have grown the B.C. Christmas Tree Association from 30 members a few years ago to about 125 now.

A Labor of Love

Anderson emphasizes that the Christmas tree industry is a labor of love. Despite the challenges, she finds joy in seeing families return year after year to pick out their tree. She describes it as a mini family reunion and highlights the fun and tradition associated with the Christmas tree experience.

Conclusion

The Christmas tree market is facing numerous obstacles, including a shortage of trees, rising costs, and disinterest from younger generations. Despite these challenges, industry members are dedicated to revitalizing the market and providing families with the joy of selecting and decorating their Christmas trees. As the holiday season approaches, it remains to be seen how these challenges will impact the availability and prices of Christmas trees for consumers.
