'Trudeau Not Worth The Cost': Canadian Opposition Leader On Row With India

Mr Poilievre also criticised other aspects of Mr Trudeau’s foreign policy.

The leader of the Conservative Party in Canada has strongly criticized Prime Minister Justin Trudeau over the ongoing diplomatic row with India, stating that Trudeau is not worth the cost and is seen as a “laughing stock” in India. Pierre Poilievre, who is considered by Canadians as a preferred choice for prime minister, has pledged to restore a professional relationship with India if his party comes to power in the 2025 general elections.

In an interview with Nepalese media outlet Namaste Radio Toronto, Poilievre expressed his discontent with the strained Canada-India relationship. He accused Trudeau of being incompetent and unprofessional, blaming him for conflicts with major powers around the world, including India. Poilievre emphasized the need for a professional relationship with the Indian government, recognizing India as the largest democracy on Earth.

Additionally, Poilievre criticized Trudeau’s handling of foreign policy, alleging that China was interfering in Canada and describing US President Joe Biden as disrespecting and mistreating Trudeau. He raised concerns about Trudeau’s embarrassments, such as inviting a Nazi to parliament during the Ukrainian president’s visit. Poilievre asserted that Trudeau’s actions are an embarrassment to Canada and its citizens, calling for a change in leadership.

Regarding the vandalization of a Hindu temple and incidents of Hinduphobia, Poilievre condemned these acts and expressed solidarity with Hindu values of faith, family, and freedom. He called for criminal charges against anyone involved in attacks on Hindu temples and people, stressing the need for religious freedom and protection for all communities.

A recent poll conducted for Canadian news platform Global News showed that 40% of Canadians prefer Poilievre as prime minister, with Trudeau receiving 31% support.

The bilateral relations between India and Canada have deteriorated since Trudeau’s remarks in parliament, implicating the Indian government in the killing of a Khalistani terrorist. Canada recently announced the withdrawal of 41 diplomats from India, citing concerns over the revocation of diplomatic immunity for its diplomats by India. India justified its actions, stating the need for parity in mutual diplomatic presence.
