The BMW 5 Series has continually increased in size with each new generation, and the eighth generation is the largest yet. The addition of a full-floor battery pack in the i5 version has also made it heavier. However, despite these changes, the driving dynamics remain intact. The all-electric i5 eDrive40, the lowest trim available in the US, retains its tight and well-riding package, making it suitable for twisty roads. While the growing size of the car is noticeable, it still delivers a solid driving experience.

The interior of the i5 features classic BMW elements but with slightly reduced tactility. A large, flowing screen now serves as the instrument cluster and infotainment display. It controls all HVAC functions, eliminating the need for physical climate controls. The materials used have also been updated, offering a more dynamic-looking ambient lighting surface. However, the changes in usability and aesthetics come at a cost.

In terms of exterior design, the i5 has a refreshing look compared to other modern BMW models. It ditches the controversial large front grille and instead features two sizable horizontal openings. The rest of the vehicle has a straightforward and inoffensive design, with the addition of a battery pack making it slightly thicker but not excessively bloated.

The i5 boasts instant electric torque and a peak horsepower of 340, though this is only available in Sport mode. The maximum torque figure of 317 lb-ft can only be achieved in Sport Boost mode. Overall, the i5 feels powerful and responsive, offering a driving experience that exceeds its actual power output. However, the size of the vehicle can be problematic in narrow spaces, and the rear-axle steering may require further tuning for optimal performance.

Despite the changes and evolution of the 5 Series, the i5 retains the necessary components for a comfortable and powerful electric sedan. It offers a WLTP-estimated range of up to 362 miles, depending on driving conditions. The interior provides ample space and features, making it a comfortable ride. However, there are drawbacks, such as the absence of physical climate controls and the car’s large size, which may pose challenges in crowded parking spaces.

The i5 comes with various options for comfort, technology, and aesthetics. One notable feature is the hands-free highway driving mode called Highway Assist, which utilizes radar sensors and cameras to enhance long-distance driving. The i5 can be customized with different wheels, interior colors, and additional creature comforts depending on the buyer’s preferences.

Compared to other electric vehicles on the market, the i5 competes directly with the Mercedes EQE 350+. While the EQE 350+ may cost more and offer less power and range, it comes with luxury features that some buyers may prefer.

Overall, the 2024 BMW i5 eDrive40 is a solid electric vehicle that offers a range of around 300 miles. While it may not be a standout revolution in the electric car market, it represents a step forward for the 5 Series. Despite a few missteps, the i5 remains a 5 Series first and an electric vehicle second. With its solid performance and suitability for daily driving, the i5 will likely appeal to many buyers.
