10 Mind-Blowing Facts About Whoop-Up Days’ Record-Breaking Attendance in 2023! You Won’t Believe #5!

This year’s Whoop-Up Days has concluded, and the final attendance numbers have been tallied. According to Mike Warkentin, the CEO of Lethbridge & District Exhibition, the fair broke attendance records. Over 77,000 people attended, which is 160% higher than the six-year average. Additionally, Saturday saw a new single-day record with 23,310 visitors. The pro rodeo also saw increased attendance, with 5,116 people attending over three days.

The surge in attendance can be attributed to several factors, including free admission, favorable weather, and the opening of the Agri-food Hub & Trade Centre. Warkentin expressed that the new facility generated a lot of curiosity, allowing thousands of people to experience it firsthand.

Trevor Lewington, CEO of Economic Development Lethbridge, highlighted the positive impact of events like Whoop-Up Days on the local economy. The fair attracts visitors to the city, leading to increased business for hotels and restaurants. While it’s uncertain how many attendees came from out of town, it is clear that out-of-town visitors contribute to the local economy. In addition, Whoop-Up Days serves as a fundraising opportunity for numerous charities and not-for-profit organizations through pancake breakfast events.

Despite the success, the influx of visitors revealed areas for improvement. Warkentin acknowledged the need to enhance line control and ensure a positive guest experience from the moment people enter the queue. Additionally, managing facilities such as washrooms posed challenges due to the unprecedented number of attendees. These lessons will be taken into consideration for the planning of the 2024 Whoop-Up Days.

Looking ahead, the organizers anticipate continued high turnout for the fair and rodeo, thanks to the continuation of free admission for at least the next four years. Plans for the next event are already underway, promising an exciting and bustling midway.
